Marred by the loss of Kirk Cousins, the Vikings struggled to find consistency from the quarterback position in 2023. A carousel of Nick Mullins, Jaren Hall and Joshua Dobbs managed to carry Minnesota to the finish line, but they came up short of their postseason hopes.
How about 2024? Cousins has left and gone to Atlanta, Sam Darnold has been brought in from San Fransisco, and J.J. McCarthy was drafted from Michigan. That is a lot of change in the what happens to be the most important position in sports. Between Darnold and the rookie McCarthy, they are surrounded by talent at all skill positions. Aaron Jones, former Packers’ star running back, had defected across the Wisconsin border into Minnesota. Jordan Addison and superstar Justin Jefferson are a great duo of wide receivers, and T.J. Hockenson is a great receiving tight end. These tools can carry the Vikings, if they have competent quarterback play.
Defensively, the Vikings with Brian Flores at the helm managed to become a nearly top-10 unit in the NFL. According to Sportingnews.com, Minnesota is ranked at the 18th best defense ahead of 2024, which is about as average as it gets.
If any quarterback manages to take the reins of this big named offense, they could find themselves in a good spot come January. Truthfully, even if McCarthy managed to utilize the offense like he did for his undefeated season in Michigan, not taking risks, trusting the run and making the big pass when needed, these Vikings could be dangerous.
