A dive into the Buffalo Bills QB Depth Chart.
Brief AFC East Overview:
A division that has been extremely one sided since the turn of the century, has finally flipped away from a New England dominance in recent years. Buffalo has become a constant main stay in the division race, while Miami has emerged as an elite offense to counter them. The Jets have spent the money to try and get into contention but have not yet been able to get out of their own way. New England is starting a new era, changing coaches for the first time in over two decades.
Josh Allen
The Bills have one of the best arm talents in the NFL (if not the best) in Josh Allen. The one thing that has held him back has been his decision making at times. Allen, who was drafted in the first round from Wyoming in 2018, has put together several impressive seasons, with his best being in 2020 (37 passing TDs, 4540 passing yards). The main danger of Allen is that while he can burn any defense with his arm, he can do just as much damage on the ground. Allen has 53 rushing touchdowns in his career, which is 2nd only to Derrick Henry since he joined the NFL in 2018.
Mitchell Trubisky
While Allen is the clear-cut starter, his play style makes it vital for Buffalo to have capable backups. Former 2nd overall pick, Mitchell Trubisky, is currently listed as the second quarterback on the depth chart. Trubisky has bounced around a bit since being drafted to the Bears, playing in Buffalo before making a multi-year stop in Pittsburgh, and then heading back to Buffalo once again in 2024. Trubisky has shown glimpses of talent during his career but seems to be better suited for a backup role as of now.
Shane Buechele
Buechele, a former SMU quarterback, currently holds the 3rd spot in the Buffalo depth chart. Buechele was initially signed as an undrafted free agent to the Kansas City Chiefs, but never actually appeared in a game. After spending some time on the Kansas City roster, Buechele was waived by the Chiefs. In 2023, Buechele signed with the Bills and joined their practice squad.
